The elf will not move while you are awake. The elf only moves at night while you are asleep. The elf will return to the North Pole to report to Santa on whether you have been good or bad, then return to your home. Once the elf has returned, the elf will find a new place inside your home. You may find your elf in all sorts of places from the kitchen counter to the Christmas tree.
What is the Elf on the Shelf?
Each Christmas a special scout elf is sent from the North Pole to your home to watch over you and report back to Santa whether you’ve been bad or good. The scout elf watches you by day, and each night, flies back to the North Pole to report to Santa on whether you were naughty or nice. The scout elf gets its magic by being named by you and being loved by you.
There are a couple rules you must follow: 1) You cannot touch the elf or it will lose its magic and 2) the elf will not move or talk while you are awake.
Does Santa pay his elves?

Why do Santa’s elves have pointy ears?
If you happened to see one of Santa’s elves, you might have wondered why they have pointed or pointy ears.
Pointy ears are just one of the unique characteristics of elves that make them special. Pointy ears give elves a heightened sense of hearing. Their well developed hearing helps them better understand and communicate ideas, thoughts, and jokes.
